When you activate Google services like Google Play and Picasa on any Android phone like the Samsung Galaxy S3, it automatically activate your Gmail account on it too. But if you want to setup a personal or work email other than your Gmail you just have to follow the steps below. Just make sure that you have internet or data connection on your mobile for that to work.

  1. Tap on Apps
  2. Tap on the icon that says "Email" and not Gmail
  3. Tap on the box and type in your email address and password
  4. Tap on Next
  5. Tap on the box that says "Give this account a name (Optional)" and type in your desired name for it such as Work or Personal. This is optional but recommend to give it a name specially if your setting up multiple email accounts on it.
  6. Tap on Done
  7. Wait for couple of minutes for the phone to check for new messages
  8. Go back to the main screen by pressing the Home button
  9. Select server type which POP3 most of the time
  10. Type in your email username on the box
  11. Type the incoming mail server of your email account in the box that says POP3 Server
  12. Select None for Security Type
  13. Type in your email's incoming port number. Try 110 if you are not sure with it.
  14. Type in your outgoing mail server.
  15. Select None again for security type.
  16. Type in your email's outgoing port number. Try 25 if you are not sure with it.
  17. Put a tick on the box that says "Require Sign In"
  18. Tap on Next.

Thats all well and good but 1) it only works when connected via WIFI and 2) the phone deletes the account daily and it needs to be recreated. Can someone explain tnat?

For some reason @Brad Gillies the reply option on my blog doesn't work. Anyway, It could be a bug with the software. I searched on the internet but I cant see any SGS3 users who are experiencing the same problem. Here are the options that I could suggest,

1. Reset your phone to its factory default then add your email back. Make sure you back up your phone to avoid loosing data.

2. If its a bug with the software, you probably have to wait for an update.

3. Use a 3rd party app where you can integrate your email.

What I would really like is an option that you could choose that would make the phone automatically swith to mobile data when sending messages so that you dont have to turn off wifi everytime you want to send an email. I always have wifi enabled as for the most part I am somewhere where I can use wifi, however it makes more sense to setup the outgoing mail server with the mobile carrier as every wifi connection has a different outgoing mail server.
At present if I want to send an email I turn off wifi and it send, it can't be too difficult to automate this one would think!

What I would like to see implemented is an option in the email setup to choose when sending an email to always use mobile data settings.
As different wifi connections have different SMTP server settings it makes sense to set up and use mobile data settings for sending emails however as wifi overides mobile data you need to manually turn off wifi to send an email. Surely it would not be too hard to set it up so it switches to mobile data to send the email and once sent switches back to wifi!
It would save me having to turn off wifi to send an email and then having to remember to turn it back on.
